Lighting Grant, October 2007
Project Shoehorn- Meeting the Challenge, July 2007

Lighting Grant
Thanks to a grant from the Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation, the Crystal Lake Public Library will upgrade its lighting this fall. This upgrade will improve the overall quality of light in the Library, use less energy , and save money. Additionally, the Library will spend less in recycling costs since the replacement lights contain less mercury. All of these cost reductions will allow the Library to direct more of its resources to purchasing library materials and providing other necessary services. It is estimated that the Library will recover the money spent on this project in four years.

Project Shoehorn - Meeting the Challenge
Work on Project Shoehorn, the Library's reorganization program, was completed on time and under budget. Library Director Kathryn I. Martens is quick to credit the work of Construction Manager Featherstone, Inc. for the professional contractors they hired and the hands-on approach they brought to all aspects of the job.
"Hiring Featherstone was clearly one of the best decisions we made when planning Project Shoehorn," said Ms. Martens. "You can't complete a project of this scope without careful planning, and the Featherstone crew was with us all the way."
Project Shoehorn was developed as as effort to best utilize Library space within the confines of the current building. The plan was formulated with input from the Citizen's Library Advisory Committee and the 2005 Public Opinion Survey.
Project Shoehorn:
- Increased Shelving by 9%
- Upgraded technology in the building, including a new, multi-purpose computer lab
and a wireless network for public use.
- Increased space allocated to story times and early literacy
- Combined adult collections on the entry level
